The Battle of the Books
The Battle of the Books is a voluntary annual event that encourages students to have fun, read good books, interact as a team, and enjoy a friendly competition. Students in grades 4-6 may participate in the Battle of the Books. Students at César Chávez Elementary in 5th and 6th grades must pre-qualify by having first participated in "la Mini-batalla de los libros," (Spanish Mini-Battle of the Books).
Teams for the English Battle of the Books are comprised of four people. Students may select their own teams and may have any combination of qualified (see paragraph above) team members from 4th, 5th and 6th grades. On the day of the Battle, students gather to be quizzed about books that they have read from the designated Battle of the Books reading list (see below). They respond to factual questions by giving short written answers that will then be verified by a judge (usually a parent or teacher). Each team receives one point for each correct response.
