Math Facts
Shameless Bribery!
All students who get 100% on both their 100 problem addition/subtraction facts and their 64 problem multiplication/division facts will get a pizza lunch with me the last week of school! Study Study Study!Students will greatly benefit from knowing their math facts with automaticity. Because of this I recommend 3-5 quick minutes of fact practice a night. It shouldn't be a long and laborious task. Make it a game. Set a timer for an amount of time, and see how many flashcards you get through correctly. Try to beat it the next night. I recommend triangular flashcards because they have been proven to help students remember fact families rather than facts and answers in isolation. They are available at Teach Your Children on 1260 Lake Blvd #106 in Davis for $7.99. Instructions should be included, but I am happy to give you quick tutorial if you stop in after school.
We test 100 addition and subtraction facts in 5 minutes every week. The long term goal is for students to score 100% by the end of the year. Once they do score 100%, they move on to 64 multiplication and division facts in 5 minutes. Again, the goal is 100% by the end of the year. Once students pass both quizzes with 100%, they will no longer be quizzed on facts in class.
Quizzes and Tests
Rather than do one all or nothing test at the end of each chapter, I break the test into quizzes that cover only the material we have learned that week. If a student scores above at a B or above on all of their quizzes, I use their total score as their test score for the chapter. If a student scores below a B, they are given a cumulative chapter test that has all of the same questions they have seen on their quizzes. So it pays to correct math quizzes after they are returned because if a studend did not do well, he or she will get another chance at the same exact problems. Students who score a B or higher have the option of taking the chapter test to try for a higher grade if they choose.
