Homework & Projects
Please consider the following a guideline for expected homework:
- Trimester project: there will be a large-scale project each trimester during the year: A poetry project in the fall, Social Studies for the winter term, and a botany project in the spring. Information about the botany project will come home in early March. Be on the lookout.
- Monthly Mini’s: Reading and researching is very important and can also be a lot of fun. Our “Monthly Mini” projects will allow students to develop their skills in this area. Our latest Monthly Mini is on Presidents & Peacemakers (first ladies too). The project is due Friday, February 26.
This researched based mini-project will follow various themes throughout the year. The first is student choice.
Students were given a file folder to use for their monthly mini-project presentation and the project guidelines. Using the inside of the file folder as a presentation board your young learner can place titles, photos, drawings, written copy, etc… to help the audience learn about the topic or person researched.
Your child will become the “expert” on this topic and will demonstrate his/her knowledge about the topic during the presentation piece of this assignment. It is a good plan to have your child practice his/her presentation in front of you, before presenting to the class.
- Weekly Work: weekly homework will be assigned on Fridays and due the following Friday. This includes vocabulary, spelling, dictation, reading, and occasionally, social studies. Any math homework will be assigned Mondays and Wednesdays. A Monday assignment is due Wednesday; a Wednesday assignment is due Friday.
Looking for something to keep those math skills in shape? Math facts practice through cards are a fun way to keep those skills sharp. Play like "war" but multiply the turned cards. The player with the answer first gets to keep the turned cards. (ie: I turn a three and you turn a four. You say "12" before I do, so you get to keep the cards). Jacks are 11, queen is 12 and king is 13. Include them for a challenge.
If it is speed practice you need, math facts in all operations are linked below. Find the one you are looking for, print it out, and off you go. Everyone should be working for 100% accuracy.
The point is to develop mastery of the facts so that the answers come almost autonomicly. The variety of facts requires students to attend to the problem and do very quick recall.
addition
subtraction
multiplicaiton
division
mixed addition & subtraction
mixed "all"
graph accuracy
The time goal is 3 minutes. Can you do it in 3? Try for 2. Mastery shows you can do it with out having to think about it.
