School Climate

Reviews of Anti-Bullying / Prosocial Behavior Resources

The following includes short reviews of a growing list of resources for addressing the issues of bullying and building positive social and emotional skills in students and adults.

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

Focus:  System wide program for change involving the school, classroom, individual and community.  Designed for students age 5 – 15. 

Goal:  Reduction of bullying, prevention of bullying and achieving better peer relations at school.

Research:  Six large scale evaluations with over 40,000 students in the U.S and Norway produced documented success in the prevention of bullying.

Distinctive features:  Does not use peer mediation or conflict resolution in its program.

Preventing Classroom Bullying:  What Teachers Can Do

Focus:  This program focuses on assisting classroom teachers.  It includes lesson plans, specific policies for the prevention of bullying and recommended practices for intervention.  

Goals: Providing guidelines to help school staff to better understand and manage the problem of bullying in school settings. 

Research: This program is based on the research done by the leading authorities on bullying.  Including Olweus D. (1993) Snell, J.L., MacKenzie, E.P., and Frey, K.S. (2002), and the US Department of Education (1998)

Distinctive features:  Uses RTI approach to prevention and intervention of bullying.

Not In Our Schools/Not in our Town

Focus: To remove hate and intolerance from schools by following these core concepts:

  1.  Silence is acceptance.
  2.  Visible inclusion sends a positive message.
  3.  Change happens when we work together.

 Goal: To guide, support, and inspire individuals and communities to work together to stop hate, prevent bullying and build safe, inclusive environments for all.

Research: Nearly twenty years of public media, peer to peer discussions, online storytelling, and positive community organization.

Distinctive features:  The entire school community is involved in identifying problems of intolerance and bullying. Solutions are defined by students and peer to peer actions. This program provides sustainability through continuing support, an online community, resources and materials. NIOS is more than a program it is a movement that tackles both bullying and intolerance.

Bullying and Disability Harassment

Civil Schools

Focus:  Civil Schools is a comprehensive program that engages all stakeholders to transform school culture and climate. Civil Schools utilizes parent engagement materials, student upstander intervention trainings, professional development and a twenty five week advisory curriculum. Civil Schools offers hands on, research based preventative tools that  educators can use to go beyond labeling and punishing students.

Approach:  Civil Schools understands that bullying and other forms of mistreatment cannot be stopped with assemblies, posters, and handouts alone. Civil Schools utilizes action oriented tools for addressing bullying and building an inclusive school culture.  The Civil Schools program is designed to provide prevention and intervention throughout the school year. 

Distinctive Features:

  • It is comprehensive
  • It is identity focused (provides interventions for identity based bullying)
  • It provides community specific interventions
  • It is not simply punitive
  • It is empathy based
  • It is inclusive and preventative
