Q: What's the difference between Zangle and Q?

A: Zangle has been morphing into Q. Currently, all teachers can access the Q Shell that shows up in the menu when they sign onto TeacherConnect. Grades and attendance can be taken in either Zangle or Q this semester, but as of Fall 2013, Zangle will disappear and Q will remain. Training needs are being assessed to make sure everyone’s ready for the transition. But for now, play around in Q—it’s pretty intuitive and user-friendly!

Q: Why do Q and School Loop "time out" during a class period?

The applications used by DJUSD professional staff that access student data have automatic time out settings of varying lengths. Federal law (FERPA) and CA Ed Code require the district and its employees to protect student information, and that protective role is assumed as a condition of professional credentialing. As teachers don’t typically log out of the SIS after using it for taking attendance – it’s not expected as it’s assumed you need to direct your attention to teaching – the intent is to provide sufficient time to record late arriving students, and then shut the SIS down before the end of the period to secure laptops left unattended in empty rooms. While a student might make mischief on an unattended and logged-in laptop, unauthorized access to Q or Illuminate is a violation of federal law and CA Ed Code, putting all of us at risk. So the upshot of this timing is yes, it’ll require a log-in each period, and that is by design.
