Joint Statement regarding 2016-2017 Academic Calendar Revisions

Joint Statement regarding 2016-2017 Academic Calendar Revisions

Davis Teachers Association, California School Employees Association and

Davis Joint Unified School District.

June 8, 2016

A change to the Academic Calendar at this point in the year is a difficult decision.  We truly apologize for this late notice and regret any inconvenience this may cause.

The 2016-2017 Academic Calendar was developed by a committee comprised of representatives from the California School Employees Association (CSEA), Davis Teachers Association (DTA) and the Davis Joint Unified School District, and approved in June 2014.  The calendar, as approved, did not include Lincoln Day as a holiday.  Recently, it was determined that Education Code and contractual obligations mandate that Lincoln Day be included as a day off, requiring an instructional day to be added back into the calendar.

Once the issue was identified, CSEA, DTA and District leadership met to find an appropriate and mutually agreeable solution.  Options discussed included starting the school year one day earlier, adding a day to the end of the year or by shifting Winter Break to make it one day shorter.  After deliberating, we decided that the best alternative would be to alter Winter Break rather than changing the start or end of the school year.  We also determined that the revised calendar would more evenly balance semesters for Davis High School.

We recognize that the change may be difficult for some individuals who have already made travel plans. To mitigate the challenges on Winter Break travel, the District has agreed declare Friday, December 23 an early dismissal day.  If individuals have preexisting travel plans that conflict with the revised Winter Break schedule, they should contact their school principal to make arrangements for students to make up work.

Again, we regret the challenges that this revision may cause employees and families as they plan for their Winter Break.  Please note, the 2017-18 Proposed Academic Calendar is under review and groups are working diligently to ensure a mutually agreeable solution is found on this issue before that final calendar is approved.
