Announcing the Safety Task Force

Davis Joint Unified recognizes that the issue of student safety is not something we face alone, nor something we can fully address in isolation. To strengthen our safety net, we need our community’s support to identify risks and find ways to implement improvements in a timely manner.

The Davis Joint Unified School District cordially invites you to participate in a Safety Task Force. The Safety Task Force is designed to provide the Davis Joint Unified District with community input on a spectrum of safety-related considerations, challenges and solutions. The Safety Task Force process will also serve to direct feedback to a variety of school safety-related plans, including our Facilities Master Plan, scheduled to be finalized in May for Board of Education consideration.

All Safety Task Force meetings will take place in April 2018, and please see the schedule here. The Task Force meetings are open to the public and will include Spanish language interpretation.

Wednesday, March 14 marks a day of national interest around gun control activism. Our schools, depending on the level of interest from students, are prepared to engage students in discourse and activities that model civic engagement.  We also know some students will want to be part of the walkouts that are occurring nationally. As a school district we support student First Amendment rights, but must ensure student safety and uphold district policies and administrative regulations.  We share with you the following guidance so our community is clear on how Davis Joint Unified will be approaching any student walkouts.

We need your feedback!
DJUSD is asking for parent/guardian and staff feedback that will help with our Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP helps the district connect the funding we receive with the goals we have established, and parent/guardian input, as well as staff input, plays a critical role in identifying these goals. There are separate 10 minute surveys for staff members, parents of elementary students, parents of middle school students, and parents of high school students. If you have children in multiple levels please take each survey that applies.
Thank you so much for your time and feedback. It is greatly appreciated!

On Thursday February 1, 2018 the DJUSD Board of Education will be considering an Education Code waiver application that would allow for short term independent study for absences fewer than five consecutive days. Students within the Davis Joint School District (DJUSD) currently experience educational inequity as a result of Education Code 46300 (e)(1), which prohibits the Davis Joint Unified School District from allowing Independent Study for absences shorter than five (5) consecutive days. DJUSD students attending a local charter school are able to receive Independent Study services, from which they benefit academically and the school receives the corresponding revenue to provide this service. The non-charter District schools are unable to provide these valuable educational services without incurring an additional cost to the district and a result creating educational inequity within the district. The District wishes to cure this inequity be waiving the five (5) day provision in Education Code 46300 (e)(1).

Having the same independent study options to serve students between Davis Charter schools and district schools will streamline local agency operations by creating a consistent policy for short term absences (fewer than five consecutive days). In addition, students in the District will be able to take advantage of the increased educational opportunities and access that come with a short term independent study program through enhanced educational opportunities, which include clear communication of expectations during the absence, utilization of independent study digital assignment management system and more clear parent-student-teacher-school communication during the absence. This increased access will improve student performance, decrease truancy and chronic absences, and create equitable access to education for all students in Davis.

During construction bicyclists and pedestrians, traveling east and west who used the Davis Little League Path will need to change their route

Route Changes Include:

  • When leaving Davis High School or North Davis Elementary and traveling eastbound:

Follow the detour signs through Community Park to the intersection of F Street and 14th Street.  At F Street and 14th Street, enter into the bike lane and ride until you reach F Street and 11th Street.  At F Street and 11th Street, a crossing guard will assist you with crossing F Street.  Then travel to H Street and follow the detour signs to the H Street tunnel.

  • When traveling from Holmes Jr. High and traveling westbound:

Go through the H Street tunnel.  Follow the detour signs on H Street headed south towards 11th Street.  At 11th Street, continue to F Street where the crossing guard will assist you across the street.  Then travel to B Street.  At B Street turn north towards 14th Street.  There is a crossing guard at B and 14th.

  • Do not cut-through the apartment parking lots between F Street and H Street.
  • Do not ride your bike the wrong way on the road.

A map of the detour can be found here.

More information on the project can be found here.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Today, October 11, experts have determined the air quality in Davis is unhealthy for all groups. The smoke from wildfires in our region continues to impact our city and county.

School remains in session but we continue to monitor the situation and the communications from the Yolo Solano Air Quality Management District and the County of Yolo.  Safety remains a top priority for our school community.  Individuals are encouraged to stay indoors with windows closed.   Students arriving at school this morning will be directed inside to multipurpose rooms or classrooms.  Students will remain indoors during recess, lunch and PE.  Athletic activities are being reviewed and updates will be available on the District and Davis website and Facebook throughout the day.

If you have a student with health concerns, please contact your school office.

Further questions about smoke conditions can be sent to Maria Clayton,  DJUSD Public Information Officer at mclayton@djusd.net.

Spring Testing Score Reports Coming Home

DJUSD families of students in grades 3-8, 10 and 11 will soon receive individual score reports for their students for the State of California new testing system. These scores are one tool designed to help teachers better understand how students are performing with new state standards and how to tailor learning strategies. Please see the following California Department of Education resource for parents that provides information on these assessments on how to understand student test results.

September 21, 2017

DJUSD is sharing the following information with our school community. We ask that anyone with information contact the Davis Police Department.  Please also take time to talk to your children about their commute to and from school and what they can do to practice staying alert and safe.

On September 20, 2017, Davis PD was notified of an Indecent Exposure incident which occurred in the area of Portage Bay West and Lake Boulevard around 3:30 pmthat afternoon.  A 13 year-old girl, while riding her bike, observed a white newer model GMC truck with its hazard lights on along the side of the road.  Upon crossing the roadway, the girl saw a white male adult exit the truck and pull down his pants to expose his genitals.  As the girl tried to call the police, the subject drove away in his vehicle.

The subject was described as a 35-40 year old white male, approximately 6’0”-6’2” tall, orange/red colored hair parted on the side, wearing an orange shirt, grey sweat pants, white shoes, and wearing aviator styled sunglasses. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400

Please take note about the important change happening at Davis Senior High School this year that will affect morning drop-off at North Davis Elementary and some other school commuters.

This school year, Davis Senior High School and Da Vinci High will join our junior high schools in implementing “Later Start.”  This year, senior high schools will be moving their start time from 7:45 am to 8:15 am.

The school district anticipates that the overlap in school arrival times with North Davis Elementary will impact traffic patterns, especially on 14th street in the morning.  Starting on the first day of school, school district staff will be on14th Street to ensure safety and to observe the impact of additional drivers and bikes on the road during the busy mornings.  We highly encourage your family to plan your commute and factor in extra time, at least for the first few days.

DJUSD staff has created a website to explain the Later start  initiative and to help educate staff, students, parents and community members about the importance of adequate sleep and school start times. Visit  http://www.djusd.net/laterstart

Roof and new HVAC work on the west side (B Street side) of the District Office (DSIS/HR/Special Ed) will occur between July 10  and Aug 2. The DJUSD facilities team has taken great care to move all affected staff and will engage in both indoor and outdoor air monitoring to ensure that no hazards are produced by this refurbishment.  Any individual wishing to access personnel in the District office during the period of construction should make an appointment with the specific office and access the building through the temporary entrance off the 5th Street parking lot.
