Why would you think it is okay to judge or stereotype someone based on what they wear? tereotyping means that you assume something about someone's personality based on their physical appearance without taking the time to get to know them. Usually, your assumptions will be wrong, because appearance doesn’t define who you are. Surveys taken by your peers have shown that most students think badly about people who dress very differently from their own tastes, without ever having talked to them.
Remember, making assumptions about someone's personality because of how they dress will give you false ideas about them. This could cause problems for both you and that person. Growing up, many of you have probably heard the saying "don't judge a book by its cover.” The next time you see a person who looks different than you, keep that saying in mind, because the people who you are judging might be some really great people. Who knows, they might become some of your closest friends if you got to know them. If you aren’t part of the solution, you are part of the problem, so do your part to make a change in our society by being a more accepting and open minded person. |
On this day...
Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930 – November 27, 1978) was an American politician who became the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California and the United States when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
World Turtle Day is May 23. Sponsored yearly since 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, the purpose of the celebration is to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive. Turtle Day is celebrated worldwide in a variety of ways, from dressing up as turtles or wearing green summer dresses, to saving turtles caught on highways, to research activities.
On May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge, linking Brooklyn and Manhattan, was opened to traffic. |
