DJUSD Launches Community Outreach Series to Discuss School Closure and District Redesign

Dear DJUSD Community,

As you have heard me mention before, DJUSD is facing significant enrollment challenges that will shape the future of our schools. For more than a decade, resident student enrollment has steadily declined due to lower birth rates and the high cost of housing in Davis. This decline has been masked by the increase in non-resident students attending our schools. However, recent enrollment trends show that without new housing development, DJUSD could lose about 1,000 students over the next 10 years, in addition to the 300 students lost since 2019. This would put pressure on district finances and school models, and could require the closure of between one and three schools within that timeframe.

At the same time, two large-scale housing developments under consideration could bring as many as 1,000 new students to DJUSD over the next fifteen years, creating both opportunities and challenges for how we plan for and balance school enrollment and boundaries.

This fall, we are hosting a series of three community outreach meetings to share detailed information and present two possible concepts for addressing the “worst-case” scenario of a 1,000-student decline over the coming decade. Just as importantly, these meetings will provide a forum for students, staff, families and community members to share ideas and feedback to help shape the future of DJUSD schools.

Currently the Board of Education plans to make a decision about the future of our schools in spring 2027, with changes beginning no earlier than the 2028–29 school year. This is part of a deliberate five-year process: last year we focused on analysis and education, and the next several years will emphasize engagement, preparation and implementation.

Community Workshop Opportunities
Each workshop will follow the same format and presentation, so you only need to attend one:

  • November 3, 2025: Davis Senior High All Student Center from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
  • November 5, 2025: Emerson Junior High Indoor Commons from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
  • November 13, 2025: Da Vinci Charter Academy Tech Hub from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Childcare and interpretation services will be available.

DJUSD hace el lanzamiento de series de comunicación con la comunidad para analizar el cierre de escuela y rediseño del distrito

Estimada comunidad de DJUSD,

Como ustedes me han oído mencionar antes, DJUSD está experimentando importantes desafíos de inscripción que van a dar forma al futuro de nuestras escuelas. Por más de una década, la inscripción de estudiantes residentes ha disminuido en forma continua, debido a la baja tasa de natalidad y el alto costo de vivienda en Davis. Esta disminución ha sido enmascarada por el aumento de estudiantes no residentes asistiendo a nuestras escuelas. Sin embargo, las tendencias de inscripción muestran que sin nuevos desarrollos de viviendas DJUSD puede perder 1000 estudiantes en los próximos 10 años, además de la pérdida de 300 estudiantes desde 2019. Esto pondría presión en los modelos de finanzas y de escuela del distrito, y podría requerir el cierre de una o tres escuelas en ese periodo de tiempo.

Al mismo tiempo, dos desarrollos de viviendas de gran escala bajo consideración, podrían traer hasta 1000 nuevos estudiantes a DJUSD dentro de los siguientes quince años, creando tanto oportunidades como desafíos para el planeamiento equilibrado de la inscripción y circunscripción de escuela.

Este otoño, estamos organizando una serie de tres reuniones de comunicación con la comunidad para compartir información detallada y presentar dos posibles conceptos para abordar el “peor escenario posible” de la disminución de 1000 estudiantes en la siguiente década. Tan importante como esto, estas reuniones van a brindar un foro para estudiantes, personal, familias y miembros de la comunidad para compartir ideas y hacer comentarios para ayudar a dar forma al futuro de las escuelas de DJUSD.

Actualmente la junta de educación planea tomar una decisión sobre el futuro de nuestras escuelas en la primavera de 2027, con cambios que comenzarán no antes del año escolar 2028-29.
Esto es parte de un proceso deliberado de cinco años, el año pasado nos enfocamos en el análisis y la educación, y los próximos años vamos a enfatizar el compromiso, la preparación y la implementación.

Oportunidades de talleres para la comunidad
Cada taller va a seguir el mismo formato y presentación, por lo que usted sólo necesita asistir a uno:

  • 3 de noviembre del 2025: Centro de todos los estudiantes (All Student Center) en la preparatoria Davis (Davis Senior High School) de 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
  • 5 de noviembre del 2025: Secundaria Emerson (Emerson Junior High) Indoor Commons de 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
  • 13 de noviembre 2025: Centro tecnologico (Tech Hub) de Da Vinci Charter Academy de 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Todas las sesiones van a tener servicio de cuidado de niños e interpretación.
