Reflecting on Our Year, Looking Toward the Future

As we close the 2025-26 school year, I want to extend my gratitude to our students, staff, families and community for another year of learning, growth and partnership across DJUSD.

This year marked the completion of Year 3 of our 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, an important milestone that reflects the collective efforts of our entire District community. Over the course of the year, we continued strengthening systems and supports that help students thrive, including equity-focused teaching practices, workforce development, data-informed decision making and stronger school-community partnerships. As these efforts continue to take root across the District, we continue to see their positive impact on student learning and outcomes.

One meaningful example of the Strategic Plan in action is our Values in Action Awards program. This year, we honored more than 100 students, staff and community members whose actions reflected the values and goals that guide our work each day. Their contributions highlight the many ways our District community brings these commitments to life in classrooms, schools and beyond.

We also continued important work to strengthen our reading screening and intervention systems. All primary teachers (and many specialists and intermediate teachers) were trained in our new phonics curriculum and have begun using the materials. Our assessment data shows us that our students are benefitting from systematic, researched based instruction and we have gratitude for the educators doing this work! These efforts are helping us better identify student needs and provide targeted support to ensure every learner has the opportunity to succeed.

I am especially proud of the work of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory. Formed in response to racist, antisemitic and discriminatory incidents occurring across our District, this group of student leaders has helped elevate conversations about belonging, respect and accountability. This year, they helped launch the “Know Better. Do Better. Be Better.” campaign and community pledge at every school site, encouraging students, staff and families to work together to create learning environments where every individual feels welcomed, valued and safe.

As we celebrate the successes of the year, we also recognize the important challenges and conversations that will continue into the future. Continuing enrollment declines will require thoughtful planning and difficult conversations about the long-term sustainability of our budget and District priorities. At its June 4 meeting, the DJUSD Board of Education decided to pause the discussions regarding school closures and boundaries and planning work, at the Board Boundary Subcommittee’s recommendation, until at least Spring 2027, and will focus next fall on communications and engagement around the District’s financial outlook and broader discussions about budget prioritization.

At the same time, we continue to examine how District policies and practices can best support student well-being, learning and belonging. This spring, the Board took action to update our mobile device policy beginning in the 2026-27 school year. The new TK-12 “Away for the Day” policy is intended to support student wellness, increase engagement and reduce classroom disruptions by restricting mobile device use, including cell phones, smart watches and other mobile devices during the school day. Additional information about “Away for the Day” implementation will be shared with families and staff closer to the start of the new school year.

This year also brought the unique responsibility of selecting a new name for César Chávez Elementary school. Following a thoughtful community process, the Board approved the name Monarca Elementary School. Monarca, the Spanish word for monarch butterfly, reflects themes of resilience, growth and transformation while honoring the school’s bilingual identity and connection to the stories of migration that have shaped our community. The monarch butterfly also holds cultural significance within many Spanish-speaking communities and serves as a powerful symbol of perseverance and hope. Implementation of the new name will take place over the summer and will be in effect at the start of the 2026–27 school year.

As we look ahead, I am filled with gratitude for the dedication, resilience and care that define our District community. Whether in classrooms, offices, athletic fields, performance spaces or volunteer efforts, each of you has contributed to the success of our students and schools.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 and all of our students for their accomplishments this year. I wish everyone a safe, restful and well-deserved summer break, and I look forward to welcoming our students, staff and families back in August for another year of learning and growth.

Reflexionando en nuestro ano, viendo hacia el futuro

Estimada comunidad de DJUSD,
Al cerrar el año escolar 2025-26, quiero expresar mi gratitud a nuestros estudiantes, personal, familias y comunidad por otro año de aprendizaje, crecimiento y colaboración en todo DJUSD.

Este año se cumplió el tercer año de nuestro plan estratégico 2023-20228, un acontecimiento importante que refleja los esfuerzos colectivos de toda nuestra comunidad del Distrito. A lo largo del año, continuamos fortaleciendo los sistemas y apoyos que ayudan a los estudiantes a prosperar, incluyendo prácticas docentes centradas en la equidad, desarrollo de la fuerza laboral, toma de decisiones basada en datos y alianzas más sólidas, entre la escuela y la comunidad. A medida que estos esfuerzos continúan arraigándose en todo el Distrito, seguimos viendo su impacto positivo en el aprendizaje y los resultados de los estudiantes.

Un ejemplo destacado del plan estratégico en acción, es nuestro programa de premios a los valores en acción. Este año reconocimos a más de 100 estudiantes, personal y miembros de la comunidad cuyas acciones reflejan los valores y metas que guían nuestro trabajo diariamente. Sus contribuciones destacan las muchas maneras en que nuestra comunidad del Distrito da vida a esos compromisos en el salón de clase y más allá.

También continuamos con un trabajo importante para fortalecer nuestros sistemas de evaluación de lectura e intervención. Todos los maestros de escuela primaria (y muchos especialistas y maestros de escuela intermedia) fueron entrenados en un nuevo currículo de fonética, y han comenzado a utilizar los materiales. Nuestros datos de evaluación muestran que nuestros estudiantes se benefician de una enseñanza sistemática basada en la investigación ¡y estamos agradecidos por los educadores que realizan este trabajo! Estos esfuerzos nos están ayudando a identificar mejor las necesidades de los estudiantes y a proporcionar apoyo específico para garantizar que cada estudiante tenga la oportunidad de tener éxito.

Me siento especialmente orgulloso del trabajo del comité asesor estudiantil del superintendente, formado en respuesta a incidentes racistas, antisemitas y discriminatorios ocurridos en todo nuestro Distrito, este grupo de estudiantes líderes ha ayudado a fomentar conversaciones sobre pertenencia, respeto y responsabilidad. Este año ayudaron a lanzar la campaña y juramento de la comunidad “Saber, Hacer, Ser Mejor”, en cada escuela, animando a estudiantes, personal y familias a trabajar juntos para crear entornos de aprendizaje donde todos se sientan bienvenidos, valorados y seguros.

Mientras celebramos los éxitos del año, también reconocemos los importantes desafíos y conversaciones que continuarán en el futuro. El descenso continuo de inscripciones requerirá una planificación cuidadosa y conversaciones difíciles sobre la sostenibilidad de nuestro presupuesto a largo plazo, y las prioridades del Distrito. En su reunión del 4 de junio, la Junta de Educación del DJUSD decidió tomar una pausa en las discusiones sobre cierres y límites escolares y el trabajo de planificación, basado en la recomendación del subcomité de límites de la Junta, al menos hasta la primavera del 2027, y el próximo otoño se centrará en las comunicaciones y la participación en torno a la perspectiva financiera del Distrito, y en discusiones más amplias sobre las prioridades del presupuesto.
Al mismo tiempo, continuamos examinando como las normas y prácticas que pueden apoyar mejor el bienestar estudiantil, el aprendizaje y la pertenencia.

Esta primavera la Junta tomó acciones para actualizar la norma de uso de dispositivos móviles, comenzando en el año escolar 2026-27. La nueva norma para TK-12 “Sin uso por el día” tiene el propósito de apoyar el bienestar de los estudiantes, aumentar la participación y reducir las interrupciones en el salón de clases, restringiendo el uso de dispositivos móviles, incluidos teléfonos móviles, relojes inteligentes y otros dispositivos móviles, durante la jornada escolar. Al inicio del próximo año escolar, compartiremos más información con las familias y el personal, sobre la implementación de “Sin uso por el día”.

Este año también trajo la responsabilidad única de seleccionar un nuevo nombre para la escuela primaria César Chávez. Posterior a un proceso comunitario reflexivo, la Junta aprobó el nombre de escuela primaria Monarca. Monarca es el nombre en español de la mariposa monarca, refleja temas de capacidad de recuperación, crecimiento y transformación, mientras que honra la identidad bilingüe y la conexión con historias de migración que han dado forma a nuestra comunidad. La mariposa monarca también tiene un significado cultural dentro de muchas comunidades que hablan español y sirve como un poderoso símbolo de perseverancia y esperanza. La implementación del nuevo nombre se realizará durante el verano y estará en efecto al comienzo del año escolar 2026–27.

Mirando hacia adelante, me siento muy agradecido por la dedicación, capacidad de recuperación, y cuidado que define a la comunidad de nuestro Distrito. Ya sea en el salón de clases, oficinas, canchas de atletismo, espacios para presentaciones o esfuerzos voluntarios, cada uno de ustedes ha contribuido al éxito de nuestros estudiantes y escuelas.

Felicitaciones a la clase del 2026 y a todos nuestros estudiantes por todo lo que han logrado este año. Les deseo unas vacaciones de verano seguras, reparadoras y bien merecidas, y espero dar nuevamente la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes, personal y familias en agosto para otro año de aprendizaje y crecimiento.
