Reflecting with Gratitude as we Look Ahead

As we mark the coming end of another calendar year, I have been reflecting on the challenges and achievements this year has held and on opportunities ahead with gratitude and optimism. I am reminded of a Brené Brown quote "I don't have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness—it's right in front of me if I'm paying attention and practicing gratitude."

Speaking of gratitude, there is so much to be proud of in DJUSD so far this school year. To name a few, we celebrated our Blue Devils Varsity Girls Water Polo team capturing the NorCal title, in our brand-new aquatics center - a milestone that represents both athletic excellence and our ongoing investment in students and facilities. We’ve seen Willett Elementary fifth grade students earn first place in the 2025 Future Problem Solving World Solutions Challenge, showcasing creativity, collaboration and academic excellence on a global stage. In addition, our DHS Baroque Ensemble recently performed at the State Capitol before several thousand educational leaders from across California, just to name a few. And we continue to shine a light on the good happening across our District through our Values in Action Awards, recognizing dozens of students, staff, families and community members who have gone above and beyond to support and enhance the values and goals of DJUSD. Our goals are guided by our five-year Strategic Plan. We’re now officially, half way through the plan and making great progress. We must also recognize that this year has not been without its challenges. Our community, our country and our world continue to be rocked by intolerance and acts of violence, which we wholly condemn. We will continue to lean into our values as we work to create environments where all students and staff feel a strong sense of inclusion and belonging. Locally, we continue to grapple with the challenges of declining enrollment and will continue to meet them head on with on-going community engagement.

Even amid this uncertainty, we remain confident that, together, we will find the path forward, because, as Brené Brown said “sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up.” I know you will all continue to show up, for our students, staff, teachers, and for the loved ones in your life. As for DJUSD, we will continue to navigate these challenging times with humanity, humility and a recognition of the many achievements worth celebrating, not just for the achievements themselves, but for what they represent. Each success reflects the collective effort of dedicated educators, supportive families, engaged community members and, of course, our remarkable students.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our schools and students. I wish you and your loved ones a restful break and a healthy, joyful start to the new year. We’ll see you when school resumes on January 5, 2026.

Estimada Comunidad DJUSD,

Ahora que se acerca el final de otro año en el calendario, he estado reflexionando sobre los retos y logros que este año ha traído y sobre las oportunidades que se avecinan con gratitud y optimismo. Me viene a la mente una cita de Brené Brown: "No tengo que perseguir momentos extraordinarios para encontrar la felicidad- está justo delante de mí si presto atención y practico la gratitud."

Hablando de gratitud, hay mucho de lo que estar orgullosos en DJUSD en lo que ha transcurrido en este año escolar. Por nombrar algunos, celebramos que nuestro equipo Femenino Varsity de Waterpolo Blue Devils gano el título de NorCal, en nuestro nuevo centro acuático, un hecho crucial que representa tanto la excelencia deportiva como nuestra inversión continua en estudiantes e instalaciones. Hemos visto a estudiantes de quinto grado de la escuela primaria Willett ganar el primer lugar en Future Problem Solving World Solutions Challenge 2025, mostrando creatividad, colaboración y excelencia académica a nivel global. Además, nuestro grupo musical Baroque de DHS actuó recientemente en el Capitolio Estatal, ante varios miles de líderes educativos de toda California, por nombrar solo algunos. Y seguimos resaltando lo bueno que está ocurriendo en nuestro Distrito a través de nuestros Premios Valores en Acción, que reconocen a decenas de estudiantes, personal, familias y miembros de la comunidad que han ido más allá para apoyar y mejorar los valores y objetivos de DJUSD. Nuestros objetivos están guiados por nuestro Plan Estratégico a cinco años. Ahora estamos oficialmente a mitad del plan y avanzando mucho. También, debemos reconocer que este año no ha pasado sin desafíos. Nuestra comunidad, nuestro país y nuestro mundo siguen siendo sacudidos por la intolerancia y actos de violencia, que condenamos plenamente. Seguiremos apoyando nuestros valores, mientras trabajamos para crear entornos donde todos los estudiantes y el personal sientan un fuerte sentido de inclusión y pertenencia. A nivel local, seguimos afrontando los desafíos de la disminución de inscripción de estudiantes y seguiremos afrontándolos de frente con la participación comunitaria continua.

Incluso en medio de esta incertidumbre, seguimos confiando en que, juntos, encontraremos el camino a seguir, porque, como dijo Brené Brown, "a veces lo más valiente e importante que puedes hacer es simplemente presentarte." Sé que todos seguirán estando presentes, por nuestros estudiantes, personal, profesores y por los seres queridos en nuestras vidas. En cuanto a DJUSD, seguiremos navegando estos tiempos difíciles con humanidad, humildad y el reconocimiento de los muchos logros que merecen ser celebrados, no solo por los logros en sí, sino por lo que representan. Cada éxito refleja el esfuerzo colectivo de educadores dedicados, familias solidarias, miembros comprometidos de la comunidad y, por supuesto, nuestros extraordinarios estudiantes.

Gracias por su continuo apoyo y compromiso con nuestras escuelas y estudiantes. Les deseo a ustedes y a sus seres queridos un descanso tranquilo, y un comienzo saludable y alegre para el nuevo año. Nos veremos cuando se reanude las clases el 5 de enero de 2026.
