As we bring the 2024–25 school year to a close and celebrate the incredible achievements of our promoting and graduating students, I find myself reflecting on a year filled with meaningful moments, valuable lessons and inspiring steps. That progress feels all the more significant given the very real economic, social, and political challenges we’ve faced—both across the nation and right here in Davis.

Before we turn the page to summer, I invite you to pause with me and take a look back at some of the memorable milestones and highlights that have shaped this school year.

Advancing our DJUSD Goals for Student Success
Last week, the Board of Education received the Year 2 Report on our Strategic Plan — and the progress is both meaningful and measurable. In just two years, we’ve made strong strides toward our Goals for Student Success.
From professional development and student-centered instruction to recognition and community building, we’re seeing real system-wide change take root. These efforts are helping us better serve all students with a continued focus on equity, inclusion and innovation. Welcoming a New Wave of Students
I’m thrilled to share that, for the first time in our District’s history, DJUSD will offer full-day Kindergarten beginning next school year—a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to early childhood education. This exciting development comes alongside the continued expansion of Universal Transitional Kindergarten, which will now be available to all four-year-olds and the S.P.A.R.K. program providing after school care for elementary-aged students. We are eager to welcome this new wave of young learners and their families into the DJUSD community, as we build a strong foundation for lifelong learning and success.

Improving Learning Environments
With the exciting expansion of our TK and Kindergarten programming comes the need for additional learning spaces. This year, we welcomed the construction of new Early Childhood Education facilities at five of our elementary school sites, providing modern, 21st-century learning environments for our youngest students. We are also nearing the completion of the highly-anticipated and final Measure M Bond-funded signature project, the Davis Senior High Aquatic Center—a significant addition not only for our Blue Devil aquatics teams, but for the entire Davis community. I’m incredibly proud of the enhancements made across our campuses and the positive impact these improvements will have on student learning and teaching. Lifting Student Voice
I am proud to have launched my Superintendent’s Student Advisory on Combating Dehumanizing Language, Symbols and Behaviors - a powerful step toward creating more inclusive school environments. This year, these student leaders have engaged in honest conversations, shared their lived experiences and offered valuable insights on how the District can respond to incidents of hate and better educate our students, staff and community about these challenges.

These student voices have been instrumental in shaping our understanding and guiding our next steps, which will launch this coming fall. I look forward to continuing this work next year with the implementation of a permanent Superintendent Student Advisory Council. Together we will keep pushing forward to improve the educational experiences for all of our students.

Celebrating our Community
This year marked the inaugural year of our DJUSD Values in Action Awards program, created to recognize students, staff, families, and community members for their contributions to student success and cultural inclusion. With nearly 100 recipients from across every school site, this program has done more than celebrate excellence—it has reinforced the core values of DJUSD and strengthened connections across our community and we look forward to continuing the celebrations next year.

Continuing the Housing-Schools Connection Conversation
Finally, as you have heard, I have been engaged in an educational outreach effort throughout the Davis community to stress the importance of including schools in the local housing conversation. Since March, my team and I have met with close to 60 groups and organizations around town, with plans to continue this effort into the Fall. Our conversation includes information on DJUSD’s declining enrollment and how, if no new housing is created in Davis, we will need to significantly restructure our District over the next decade. This critical conversation will be on the forefront going into the summer and, as we begin this next school year, I will continue to keep our DJUSD and Davis community informed.

Looking Ahead
While challenges persist and the work is far from finished, we remain firmly rooted in the core values that guide us. With open hearts and a clear sense of purpose, we will continue to face the complex issues impacting our community—both locally and beyond. I am confident that together, we will continue to empower our students to succeed academically, build social-emotional resilience and enjoy positive, enriching and inclusive school experiences.

Al cerrar el año escolar 2024-25 y celebrar los increíbles logros de nuestros estudiantes que se promueven y gradúan, me encuentro reflexionando sobre un año lleno de momentos significativos, lecciones valiosas y etapas inspiradoras. Este progreso se siente más significativo dado los desafíos económicos, sociales y políticos que encontramos - tanto en toda la nación como aquí en Davis.

Antes de que demos vuelta la página para el verano, les invito a que tomen una pausa conmigo y miren hacia atrás a algunos de los hitos y momentos memorables que han dado forma a este año escolar.

Avance de nuestra metas para el éxito estudiantil de DJUSD
La semana pasada, la Mesa Directiva de Educación recibió el informe del 2do año de nuestro plan estratégico — y el progreso es significativo y medible. En sólo dos años hemos dado pasos firmes hacia nuestras metas para el éxito estudiantil.

Desde desarrollo profesional y enseñanza centrada en el estudiante hasta reconocer y crear comunidad, estamos viendo tomar forma un cambio real de todo el sistema. Estos esfuerzos nos están ayudando a servir mejor a nuestros estudiantes, continuar concentrándonos en equidad, inclusión e innovación. Bienvenida a una nueva ola de estudiantes
Estoy encantado de compartir que, por primera vez en la historia de nuestro distrito, DJUSD va a ofrecer kindergarten (jardín de infantes) de día completo a partir de comienzos del próximo año escolar — un importante hito en nuestro continuo compromiso con la educación de infancia temprana. Este emocionante desarrollo viene junto la continua expansión de transición a kindergarten (TK por sus siglas en inglés) universal, el cual va a estar ahora disponible para todos los niños de cuatro años, y el programa S.P.A.R.K. que brinda cuidado después de escuela a los estudiantes de escuela primaria. Estamos encantados de dar la bienvenida a esta nueva ola de jóvenes estudiantes y a sus familias a la comunidad de DJUSD, mientras construimos una fundación sólida para el aprendizaje y el éxito para toda la vida.

Mejora de entornos de aprendizaje
Junto con la emocionante expansión de nuestros programas de TK y kindergarten (jardín de infantes) viene la necesidad de espacios adicionales de aprendizaje. Este año, dimos la bienvenida a la construcción de las nuevas dependencias de Educación de Primera Infancia, en cinco de nuestras escuelas primarias , brindando ambientes de aprendizaje modernos del siglo 21 para nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes. También casi hemos terminado el muy anticipado Centro Acuático de la Preparatoria Senior High, último proyecto financiado por el impuesto predial medida M — una importante adición no solo para nuestros equipos de natación Blue Devil, sino también para toda la comunidad de Davis. Me siento muy orgulloso de las mejoras hechas en todos nuestros campuses y del impacto positivo que estas mejoras van a tener en el aprendizaje y la enseñanza de los estudiantes. Muchas gracias votantes de Davis por su permanente apoyo a las escuelas de Davis.

Alzando la voz de los estudiantes
Estoy orgulloso de haber comenzado mi consejo estudiantil asesor del superintendente para combatir el lenguaje, los símbolos y los comportamientos deshumanizantes - un importante paso para crear entornos escolares más inclusivos. Este año, estos estudiantes líderes han participado en conversaciones honestas, han compartido sus experiencias de vida y han ofrecido una valiosa perspectiva sobre cómo el Distrito puede responder a incidentes de odio y educar mejor a nuestros estudiantes, el personal y la comunidad sobre estos desafíos.

Estas voces de los estudiantes han sido fundamentales en darle forma a nuestra comprensión y han guiado nuestros siguientes pasos, lo que va a comenzar este otoño. Espero continuar este trabajo el próximo año con la implementación de un Consejo Asesor Estudiantil del Superintendente permanente. Juntos vamos a seguir presionando para mejorar las experiencias educacionales para todos nuestros estudiantes.

Celebrando nuestra comunidad
Este año marcó el año inaugural de nuestro programa Premios de Valores de DJUSD en Acción creado para reconocer estudiantes, personal, familias y miembros de la comunidad por sus contribuciones al éxito y la inclusión cultural de los estudiantes. Con casi 100 personas de casi todas las escuelas, este programa ha hecho más que celebrar la excelencia — ha reforzado los valores fundamentales de DJUSD y ha fortalecido las conexiones en nuestra comunidad y esperamos continuar las celebraciones el próximo año.

Continuando la conversación sobre la conexión vivienda-escuelas
Finalmente, como han escuchado, he estado activamente en un esfuerzo de difusión educativa en toda la comunidad de Davis para enfatizar la importancia de incluir a las escuelas en la conversación sobre la vivienda local. Desde marzo, mi equipo y yo nos hemos reunido con cerca de 60 grupos y organizaciones en toda la ciudad, con planes de continuar este esfuerzo hasta el otoño. Nuestra conversación incluye información sobre la disminución de la matrícula en DJUSD y como, si no se crean nuevas viviendas en Davis, necesitaremos reestructurar significativamente nuestro distrito durante la próxima década. Esta conversación crítica estará a la vanguardia durante el verano, al comenzar el próximo año escolar, continuaremos manteniendo informada a nuestra comunidad de DJUSD y Davis.

Mirando hacia el futuro
Si bien los desafíos persisten y el trabajo está lejos de terminar, seguimos firmemente arraigados en los valores fundamentales que nos guían. Con corazones abiertos y un claro sentido,continuaremos enfrentando los problemas complejos que afectan a nuestra comunidad, tanto a nivel local como más allá. Estoy seguro de que juntos, continuaremos empoderando a nuestros estudiantes para que tengan éxito académico, desarrollen capacidad de adaptación socioemocional y disfruten de experiencias escolares positivas, enriquecedoras e inclusivas.

Espero que todos tengan la oportunidad de pasar un tiempo significativamente rejuvenecedor con su familia y amistades este verano.
