DJUSD Students and Staff Celebrate the Culmination of
the 2024 Summer Apprenticeship

(Davis, September 17, 2024) The Davis Joint Unified School District (DJUSD) is proud to announce the conclusion of this year’s annual paid summer work experience program in partnership with Bayha Group. Though this is the fourth year of partnering with Bayha Group to bring paid work experiences to Davis students, it is the first year apprentices had the opportunity to take part in a registered apprenticeship program and earn a California State Apprenticeship Certification demonstrating their competencies.

Over the summer, District administration, students and members of Bayha Group marked the occasion with a celebration at Da Vinci High School’s Tech Hub. The celebration was organized by apprentices taking part in the Event Production and Planning Deep Dive. The event featured apprentices showcasing what they learned from their summer work experience, apprentice-organized games and giveaways, and a catered lunch.

“I really enjoyed this experience. It was an amazing learning opportunity, and I grew so much. From the start of the apprenticeship, I learned so many useful skills that will be applicable in many fields! I plan to take what I’ve learned and apply it during my senior year of high-school and beyond.” - DJUSD Student

The summer apprenticeship program was offered to students taking Career Technical Education (CTE) courses. During the 8-week program, 21 Davis Senior High, Da Vinci High and Martin Luther King High students worked directly with industry professionals across career fields to gain valuable, relevant hands-on work experience in direct alignment with DJUSD’s Graduate Profile. With a focus on bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical application, this apprenticeship provided a unique opportunity for students to gain insight into diverse industries, as well as develop their skills in: Adaptability and Resilience, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity and Innovation.

The Tech Hub owes its existence in part to the CTE Facilities grants secured by Bayha Group for DJUSD in 2019. More recently, Bayha Group successfully obtained funds from the California Apprenticeship Initiative, ensuring that even more DJUSD students will have the opportunity to participate in paid apprenticeships in the coming year.

Each apprentice participated in a Deep Dive led by an industry professional in that field. Deep Dives spanned a wide variety of sectors. Apprentices were immersed in tasks that challenged their problem-solving abilities, encouraged teamwork, and provided a firsthand understanding of workplace dynamics. Students participated in the following Deep Dives: Arts, Media, and Entertainment Collaborative; Business Development and Entrepreneurship; Engineering and Design in Product Development; Environmental Restoration Project; Event Production & Planning; Generative Artificial Intelligence; and Product/Service Innovation Development. All apprentices presented their work publicly during live streamed showcases, which can be viewed at youtube.com/bayhagroup.

“This has been a really great experience for our students. I’m so grateful for our partnership with the Bayha Group, the opportunities they provide for our students and the way their vision aligns with our Goals for Student Success.” – Tyler Millsap, DJUSD Administrator on Special Assignment
