Special Education

The mission of DJUSD Department of Special Education is to support all students with disabilities in achieving their highest potential in the areas of academics, communication, social skills and life skills to become included, productive, members of the community.

Special Education Services foster inclusive educational climates where individuality and diversity are respected, honored and celebrated. We strive to partner with our students and parents in designing the most exciting learning environments for the academic, social and emotional success of each student - where all teachers and staff design curriculum that is universally accessible for all students in alignment with our community’s educational values.
DJUSD provides support to students with identified disabilities. As professional educators, whether our role is in general education, special education, or administration, we believe it is our collective responsibility to support students who receive special education programs and services to meet the District standards and their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
Special Education is specialized instruction provided for children from birth to age 22 who qualify according to the laws and regulations outlined by the state and federal government.
If you have questions about Special Education programs or would like to request a review for assessment, contact Special Education at (530) 757-5300 X113.

Inclusion in DJUSD

In 2018, DJUSD was recognized by the State of California as an Exemplary School District due to our special education Inclusion program. DJUSD has been  providing an inclusive education for students with moderate/severe disabilities since 1989. DJUSD was the first school district in the state of California to start an Inclusion program. Inclusion started when a small group of Davis parents and teachers whose children were being served by Yolo County's Special Education program at Greengate School in Woodland wanted to bring their students back to Davis to attend their general education, neighborhood school. In 1989, DJUSD served four students in Inclusion programs at two elementary schools. Today, DJUSD serves over 200 students in inclusion programs at elementary and secondary schools in our district.
