Retiree Benefits

Future Retirees, Planning for Retirement

Planning for Retirement
Congratulations on reaching this important milestone. As you prepare for retirement, there are several benefit decisions to consider. Planning ahead can help ensure a smooth transition from active employee benefits to retiree benefits.

Retirement Checklist
Before retiring, we recommend that you:

  • Notify CalPERS or CalSTRS of your intent to retire and verify your service credit.
  • Review your retiree medical plan options through CalPERS.
  • Determine whether you may be eligible for a DJUSD Retiree Fringe Benefit contribution.
    DTA Retiree Fringe Benefit MOU
    CSEA Retiree Fringe Benefit MOU
  • Complete Retiree Welcome to Benefits form to transfer your benefits from Active to Retiree, changing plan coverage specifications and premium rate.
  • Contact any supplemental insurance providers (American Fidelity, Standard, Envoy, etc.) to discuss continuation or cancellation of coverage.
  • Confirm that DJUSD has your current personal email address, mailing address, and phone number. Information requested on Retiree Welcome to Benefits form.

Medical Benefits - CalPERS Health
Medical Benefits (CalPERS Health)

Once enrolled in a Retiree CalPERS health plan:

  • The District contributes $162 per month toward Admin Fee of CalPERS medical premium
  • This amount is paid directly by DJUSD to CalPERS Health, this is your Retiree Fringe Benefit as stated in Article XVII of the CSEA Bargaining Agreement, and Article XXVI of the DTA Bargaining Agreement.
  • Your portion of medical coverage once retired is automatically deducted from your retirement benefit.
  • Important: Medical benefits are administered through CalPERS. Any changes to your medical plan should be made directly through CalPERS.

If you are a 10 or 11 month employee that contributed toward summer health care premiums during the school year, your account will be reconciled and refunded on your last paycheck with DJUSD.

Dental & Vision Benefits
DJUSD retirees may continue dental and vision coverage through the District.

Important things to know:

  • You may enroll in retiree dental and vision coverage even if you were not enrolled as an active employee.
  • New retirees must enroll within 60 days of retirement.
  • Once retiree dental or vision coverage is declined or canceled, re-enrollment may not be available

Retiree Fringe Benefit Eligibility
Eligible retirees may receive the District’s fringe contribution in one of the following ways:

1. CalPERS Health Coverage: If retirees continue CalPERS health benefits as a DJUSD retiree, the District will apply the fringe benefit toward monthly CalPERS administrative fees, paid directly by the District. OR
2. DJUSD Retiree Dental and Vision Coverage: If retirees elect not to continue CalPERS health coverage, the District’s annual fringe benefit of $1,500 may be applied toward DJUSD retiree dental and vision plans, provided the retiree enrolls and meets eligibility requirements as outlined in the applicable bargaining agreements.

The contribution continues through the retiree's 65th birthday and is prorated monthly.
