TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN (TK)

The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 established TK which offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum for young students and builds a strong foundation for school success. TK classes are three hours and twenty minutes a day during either a morning or afternoon session similar to Kindergarten. The program will follow the DJUSD calendar.

Davis Joint Unified School District is accepting TK enrollments for the 2024-25 school year for Davis residents.  Registration forms (found below) can be emailed to enrollment@djusd.net or dropped off at the District Office.

For the 2024-25 school year, children within the district who has turned or will turn 4 between September 2, 2023 and June 2, 2024, are eligible to enroll in TK.

DJUSD currently offers TK programs at the following elementary schools: Birch Lane, Cesar Chavez, Korematsu, Montgomery, North Davis,  Patwin, Pioneer and Willett. Should TK enrollment increase or decline, there may be a need to add or eliminate sites.

Families may apply for an Intra District Transfer to attend a TK site other than their attendance/neighborhood area. Requests to transfer to another school are approved based upon space availability in TK at the requested school.

Parents/guardians of children eligible for Fall 2024 TK enrollment must submit a complete enrollment packet to register. Partial enrollment packets will not be accepted. The required documents are listed below under Kindergarten Registration.

Early admission into Kindergarten may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Upon reaching their 5th birthday, families of a TK student may petition to request a promotion to Kindergarten. The petition process will include a review of academic assessments and a Student Study Team meeting including parents, classroom teacher, principal, and site specialists including reading teacher and counselor when appropriate. The Student Study Team will determine if promotion to Kindergarten is appropriate considering the student’s academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and maturity levels. Placement in Kindergarten is dependent upon available space.

There are cases where school districts and parents agree that a Kindergarten-eligible student is better served in TK. These children will enroll in Kindergarten and parents notified by the first day of school if space is available in TK. Should a Kindergarten eligible student participate in a TK program, a "Kindergarten Continuance" form will need to be completed (in collaboration with the school site) for the child to attend Kindergarten in the following year.
